Welcome to Ms. Herrera's 6th grade English, History, and Core at DRMS!

This year promises to be an exciting one, as we navigate our way through online distance learning together. We will be busy daily, exploring novels, writing genres, grammar exploration, delving into many ancient civilizations, and engaging in core study skills together.

Please see my class handouts page for my syllabus for all classes. Please also see this page for the Pod A Class Expectations, setting up Class Link and Aeries information. We will refer to the syllabus and the Pod A Expectations regularly, so you're going to want to be familiar with them.

As we have only 2 days a week per class, each day will be a rigorous one. You will be expected to be focused and work to the best of your ability each time you are in class. I know you can do it! I look forward to meeting you!

  • Hello and Hooray!

I want to be the first to welcome you back to the start of a new school year.  I am looking forward to experiencing this new year with you.  I know that it is not a the normal way of attending school, but it will be an exciting new adventure, one that I will be experiencing with you all!

We will have a lot to learn from each other as we traverse this new way of learning.  I want you to know, that it is important that if you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.  If I don't know the answer, I will either find out the answer for you or connect you with someone who does. I have included my direct email at the bottom of this email, so please do not hesitate to contact with with any questions that you may have.

Let's make this year one of the best that you have, we already know that it will be one of the more memorable!!

    A few reminders:

    • School started Tuesday September 1, 2020 online through Microsoft Teams at 8:30 A.M.
    • Please make sure that your student is able to log into Microsoft Teams.  I want make sure that I am able to meet all of the students that are enrolled in my class.  Below you will find links to be able to log in.  The information should also be on the pink paper given to you when you picked up your student's schedule and books.
    • When your student logs into Teams, please have them visit every class to be able to review the class syllabus and the Pod A Video and Classroom Expectations.  These will be reviewed everyday this coming week, but it is important that your child is already familiar with them.  The syllabus and the Video and Classroom Expectations can also be found on my personal website: Please feel free to read them there as well.
    • When your student logs on for class, please ensure that your student has a designated quiet and bright space so that they are easily seen on camera.
    • As a parent, you are welcome and invited to join us for the first week of class, if that is your wish.  I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have as well as your student will have.  If you join, please make sure that you are visible on camera as well, this will make it easier to match parent and student faces, both for online interaction and when we go back to the classroom.
    • Homeroom, which at school is 3rd period, is being moved to the end of the school day from 2-2:30 pm.  This time will be used for your student to read silently a grade and reading level appropriate book while on camera, working on homework while on camera, and/or getting additional help from me.
    • Core Enrichment will be a variety of study skills, fun activities, and occasional free class majority choice.  If your student has any appropriate suggestions for the free majority choice time, I hope that they would be willing to share them.
    • Virtual office hours, times that you and/or your student can get in immediate and private contact with me, are Tuesday thru Friday 9:30 am-10 a.m, 11:10-11:40 a.m., and 1:20-1:50 p.m.  These are important times, so please make sure that your student is using them for extra help.  To "enter" office hours, go to the day's class on the given weekday and click "meet now."  It will inform me that there is someone waiting for me and I will connect.  (Example: for a meeting at 9:30, go to the 1st,and/or 5th period class and click the "meet now" button., for a meeting at 11:10, go to the 2nd period class and click the "meet now" button, and finally for a meeting at 1:20, go to the 4th and /or 7th period class and click the 'meet now" button.)
