Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Andrew Wilson
Andrew Wilson has been teaching Japanese at Deer Valley High since October 2014. Early in that school year, the longstanding Japanese teacher, Ms. Sugiura, had to suddenly retire from her position, and Mr. Wilson, who had lived and worked in Japan for 5 years (three decades earlier) stepped in and began teaching the 4 levels of Japanese at Deer Valley. Previously, Mr. Wilson had taught Biology, World and US History, and ELD at Deer Valley High and before that had taught at Freedom High School for 10 years. To quote Mr. Wilson, "becoming a Japanese teacher has been a renaissance for me--a fresh source of motivation and joy for me in my profession. Interacting with the amazing kids that choose to take Japanese is the best thing about my job, in fact the best thing in my 30-plus years of teaching."
Mr. Wilson also teaches English Language Development at DV, a class for students who are developing more proficient English language skills. "Those kids are a lot of fun--and we enjoy our time together working on our English skills."
This year, Mr. Wilson and his students are actively promoting the program and raising the level of teamwork and excitement by organizing 3 cultural festivals, including the Anime/Cosplay Festival (November 17, 2017) the Japanese Food Festival (March 29, 2018), and the DV Cherry Blossom Festival (April 20, 2018). You, your friends and family are all invited to attend!
Mr. Wilson received a BA in Geography from UC Berkeley, and a MA in Multicultural Education from University of San Francisco.
Mr. Wilson is married to Yasuko Wilson, whom he met in Japan, and is father to James Wilson, a DVHS Class of 2011 graduate.
