Degrees and Certifications:
Principal Blair Wilkins
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope everyone had a restful summer break and had an opportunity to recharge as we gear for the 2019-20 school year! It is with great pleasure that I write this letter to you as the incoming principal of Marsh Elementary School. It is truly an honor to become a part of the Marsh Tiger family and community - I am very excited to join the team.
I come to Marsh with 13 years of experience as an educator. I began working in the Antioch Unified District in 2006 as a substitute teacher. I was hired the following school year at Deer Valley, where I taught United States History. I spent the next 5 years at Antioch High School teaching various subjects within the Social Science department, as well as becoming the Department Chair. During the 2013-14 school year, I was named Vice Principal and returned to Deer Valley, where I have successfully served for the past 6 school years.
I look forward to working with Marsh’s students, parents, staff, and additional school community to familiarize myself with the unique needs of our school. I believe wholeheartedly that every student deserves a quality education, and that only happens when the school and the families work together.
Dr. Sara Roat is returning as Vice Principal, as well as Amy Eudy and Milagro Medrano serving in their same capacities in the office. Additionally, Mrs. Calhoun is returning as the school counselor. The new school secretary is Miss Odette Mittone. She comes to Marsh from Deer Valley High with a wealth of experience. She also served as my administrative assistant for six years at Deer Valley.
We will continue to focus our priorities on safety, as well as the academic and social emotional development of your child. We will also continue to provide quality instruction that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. We have worked on increasing student access to technology, as we have added two technology carts to the school. I will work with the staff and build on previously-implemented teaching practices that focus on culturally-responsive best practices to engage and support our learners.
An additional priority that I will be working with our school community on is attendance. Please assist us in getting your student to school on time each and every day. School starts at 7:59am; however, we would like to encourage your student to take advantage of our free breakfast program that begins at 7:25am each morning in the cafeteria.
Our 6th Annual Ice Cream Social is scheduled on Friday, August 9, 2019, from 4:30-6:30pm in the multi-purpose room/cafeteria. This time has been set aside to allow you and your child to socialize with other parents, peers, and the Marsh staff. Please encourage your child to introduce you to a staff member.
This year we will begin the pick-up card procedure for kindergarten students and continue it for students in 1st – 5th grades in an effort to minimize delays in the parking lot and allow for a smoother dismissal. Parents will receive name cards for their student(s) during the first week of school. After writing your child’s information on the card, place it on your visor or windshield area so that it is visible when driving through the pick-up zone. After pulling your car all the way forward, the teacher on duty will read the name on the card and call for your student to get into the car. Please remember that there is no parking along the curb in the pick-up lane at any time. If you need to park, please park in a designated space or on the street; this keeps the traffic moving and gives better access to our busses.
Included with this letter is a copy of our updated Uniform Dress Code. I hope that you will find that it includes more options for your children, so that we can continue to focus on their education and minimize disruptions during the school day.
As a reminder, the first day of school is Wednesday, August 7th; it is also a shortened Wednesday, with students being dismissed at 1:00pm. Class assignments will be posted on Tuesday, August 6th after 4:00 PM. On the first three days of school - from August 7th through August 9th - parents/guardians will be allowed to walk students to the playground and connect with teachers in the mornings. Beginning Monday, August 12th, only TK and Kindergarten parents may continue to assist their students in the cafeteria before school. Students in grades 1-5 may kiss and hug their family members and say goodbye at the entrance gate each morning.
I’m looking forward to an incredible school year for your child here at Marsh Elementary School!
