• Welcome to 4th Grade!

    I'm looking forward to an exciting year!

    This year we'll be working to integrate science and social studies into language arts and math, so students can see that you can apply reading and writing strategies and math skills into all areas of the curriculum. We're also starting to implement Project Based Learning (PBL) as a way to increase student engagement and prepare students for the modern workplace. STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities will be one component of the PBL classroom.

    Social Emotional Learning (SEL) will also be a key component of our classroom. Students work best when they feel safe and secure, and we'll use Toolbox strategies, as well as other initiatives, to create a welcoming classroom and school.  

    We are working on both field trips and classroom visitors that will enhance the 4th grade curriculum. These will include a field trip to the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and classroom visits from the Bedford Gallery, the Contra Costa Water District, and The Gardens at Heather Farms.

    In fourth grade, students transition from learning to read- decoding words and learning sight words- to reading to learn. We will be reading a lot of non-fiction and using information from multiple sources to draw conclusions. Students will also be working on writing opinion pieces and informational pieces that show what the've learned.

    Students will work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of larger whole numbers, as well as working with fractions and decimals. Students will also be working on complex, multiple-step word problems that reflect real life application of the math skills and strategies they've learned.

    In Science, we will learn about energy and waves; the structures and processes of molecules and organisms; the ways humans impact the earth and the earth has an impact on humans; and the engineering process.

    Social Studies Focus- Students will learn about the history of California, and how geography, and geology of the state affected the way it developed over time.

    10:05 - 10:20- Recess- time for the restroom, a snack, and playing!

    12:15 - 12:55- Lunch and time for the restroom and playing!

      1:05 - Dismissal on WEDNESDAY ONLY!

      2:45 - Dismissal on Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Fri.

Since I started teaching in 1999, I've taught 3rd grade, 4th grade, 4th/5th grade combos, and 5th grade; worked as a reading teacher for 2nd-5th grade; and taught teachers about using technology in the classroom. 

When I'm not teaching, I love to travel! When I can't be on the road, I like to read, crochet, canoe, kayak, and paddleboard, and hike. I love having my class filled with plants and books, and a stash of chocolate!
