Parents and students might think that absences are only a problem if they are unexcused, or that attendance only matters in the higher grades. That is not accurate. Chronic absenteeism can have a lifelong impact on students. It is defined as missing ten percent or more of the academic year for any reason (or two days per month), including excused and unexcused absences, suspensions and any time missed due to changing schools. Communicate with your child about how attendance is a significant factor for them to achieve their education goals and embark on a road to higher education or professional training. Your support is essential!
