What is a Wellness Room?

A Wellness Room is a dedicated space/room within a school where students can go to self-regulate their emotions. If kids are feeling stressed, anxious, or are in need of some time alone, they can drop in to the calm, quiet space of the Wellness Room.

Kimball's Wellness Room has five distinct sections or centers. Students choose the center they feel will help them self-regulate their emotions. For students that need to move their body our yoga center has comfortable mats, yoga balls, and posters with yoga poses. Our kinesthetic center has tennis balls and a "target" at which the students can throw the balls. We have a creativity center where students can use a sand table, build with playdough, color, or draw. Our reading center has comfy chairs and a wide selection of books from which students may choose. And finally, our "relaxation" center has a tent, comfy pillows and stuffed animals, and a colorful "fish tank" which is soothing to watch.

The Kimball Wellness Room is staffed with personnel trained to support students in identifying their emotional needs and guiding them to use effective coping strategies. Students benefit from the calm and welcoming setting of the Wellness Room as it is a proactive approach to regulating their own emotions. Taking time away in the Wellness Room allows children to return back to the classroom ready to learn.
