2025-26 Counseling Program for Grades 4-8
The School Counseling Program is designed to work within a school-wide multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). There are 3 MTSS levels:
Tier 1 (all students)
Tier 1 supports are the foundation of the MTSS framework. Tier 1 supports are provided to all students to provide high quality instruction and create a positive learning enviroment. The counselor delivers targeted lessons differentiated by grade level to support all students in their personal, social, and academic growth.
Classroom Guidance Lessons
Classroom guidance lessons will be delivered throughout the year. Topics vary by grades level. The focus for each grade level is below:
4th grade - self-regulation, communication skills, and friendship skills
5th grade - character education
6th grade - academic success, skills to navigate middle school, introduction to college/career
7th grade - academic success, college and career exploration through SchooLinks
8th grade - preparation for high school and post-secondary goals; college/career exploration through SchooLinks
Tier 2 (targeted supports)
Students that are identified as struggling are referred to the school's CARE team, which implements additional targeted interventions and supports. The school counselor is an integral part of the CARE team, helping to select additional interventions to support the student. Students in Tier 2 require a little extra assistance in meeting academic and/or behavioral goals. Examples of interventions might include small group instruction, positive behavior interventions, Student Study Team meetings, or other groups for skill development.
Tier 3 (individualized supports)
Tier 3 interventions are the most intensive and individualized level of support, designed for students with significant and persistent needs who haven't responded to Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions. They focus on providing tailored, one-on-one support to address specific learning, behavioral, or social-emotional challenges. This may include individual counseling, referrals for more intensive services, collaboration with outside agencies, or individualized behavior plans.
