Dear Parents and Guardians,
There are many ways you can help your student stay on track and attend school every day. Join us as we work together to help every child advance their education. Here are details about the importance of school attendance and the consequences of absenteeism.
Going to school every day has a key impact on students’ education. Children who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not attend class in a consistent manner. Making sure your student goes to school means you are contributing to their opportunities to have a successful academic experience and a more promising future.
Did you know that even at the preschool and kindergarten level, absenteeism can affect your student’s learning experience? Chronic absence means that the student misses at least 10% of the school year, or two days per month, and is an indicator that the child is off track for learning. Students who are chronically absent in preschool and kindergarten are much less likely to read and count proficiently by the end of third grade. Chronic absence is associated with declines in educational engagement, social-emotional development, and executive functioning. Instilling a sense of responsibility and interest in going to class every day will benefit your student for life!
Motivating your child to go to school is fundamental! One way of doing this is by engaging children in tracking their own daily attendance and recognizing weekly progress. Remember to celebrate improvements! Be creative and make this a fun challenge for the family! It's not too late to get your child back on track!
Is your student an Attendance HERO? Our district honors the commitment to come to school every day! HERO is more than an acronym; it is the recognition of actions that make your child more receptive to the opportunities of an education.

It’s not just one day without school. Absences can accumulate and become a big problem. Low attendance is an indicator of low achievement in transitional grades and is an early warning for the risk of dropping out. Let’s do our best to engage students so they come to class regularly. This is a team effort.
Sincerely,
Dr. Darnise Williams
